Descobrir Joaquim Jordà

Descobrir Joaquim Jorda is a colaborative project created and developed by MEATS-Elisava and a team integrated by professors and students from the Masters in Creative Documentary-UPF, led by Jordi Balló.

Joaquim Jordà was a prominent writer, screenwriter and film maker. His genius vision and work opened new ways to create and understand documentary movies. He was also a prominent professor in the UPF communication school and some of his most relevant movies were produced in collaboration with the master’s in creative documentary.

Descobrir Joaquim Jorda is an exhibition co-curated by MEATS students and UPF students that never met Jordà and discovered his personality and legacy along the curatorship process. The main aim of the curatorial proposal was to let the students discover and explain, through an exhibition, the person, the artist and his vision and work to the present students of the UPF communication Campus that, as them, never met him and didn’t know his work.

MEATs students’ contribution to the project consisted in co-curating, conceptualising, developing and producing the exhibition. After visioning the movies and interviews and reading many texts and articles, MEATS students proposed 5 different narratives and exhibition formats. All these ideas were discussed in group to come out with a consistent exhibition concept. From there, the students developed the design and managed production and construction.

Now You See Me Moria school kit

Now You See Me Moria uses diverse digital platforms to publish images and videos of the daily life and the dramatic life conditions in the camp and invites European citizens to take action, based on theses images, to spread the information and send messages to the EU politicians and mass media.

The project also reaches cultural institutions all over Europe (museums, photography festivals) while keeping the original aim: to reach as many citizens as possible and engage them to spread the message.

Our contribution to Now You See Me Moria consisted in proposing new formats for the project that should hep to reach new environments and ad new activists while remaining faithful to the essence.

We developed 5 proposals and the school kit is the first one that has been produced and distributed in 20 schools in Madrid and Barcelona. It has also been translated to Dutch, German and Italian and it is expected to be distributed in many schools all over Europe.

The School kit contains the original action book (edited by previously to our participation), an instruction booklet with a link to a introduction video, 4 letters handwritten by children living in the camp and 6 thematic sets containing each one 4 possible actions to make and report.

The aim of the kit is to inform children in European schools about this shameful reality happening in Europe and at the same time give them tools to take collaborative actions to contribute to change it.

What money cannot buy

La Pedrera’s seasonal lighting is taken as an opportunity for critical reflection on the commodification of Christmas and the contemporary political situation in Catalonia, blurring the boundaries between architecture, art and activism.

This installation responds to the commission to design the Christmas lighting of La Pedrera, one of Antoni Gaudí's most important and popular works. The proposal starts from an intensive study of the building: The architecture, the history, and its place in contemporary Barcelona. The study allowed us to qualify and quantify the enormous visibility of the main facade both on a local and global scale. Every day, tens of thousands of passers-by pass in front of it and thousands of visitors take photos that they share on their social networks.

The facade of La Pedrera is, in fact, a global screen, probably the most visible in Barcelona.

On the other hand, La Pedrera is in the heart of Passeig de Gràcia, the place where the most luxurious commercial establishments in the city are concentrated.

These two conditions were revealed to us as an opportunity to generate, through this large global screen, a debate about the great contradictions of the Christmas holidays in a capitalist society like ours.

The superimposition on the curves of the facade of a virtual inclined plane that contains words representing the traditional values of Christmas interspersed with the action "buy" generates a proposal for debate that, like Calligram, is disseminated daily, spontaneously and massively all over the planet via the internet.

Ephemeral architecture for primavera sound: Temporary Master Plan

A master plan for a large scale temporary event, to improve both the user experience and set the design guidelines for the new global imagery of one of the top 10 music festivals in the world.

Primavera Sound is a reference festival at a global level. With 20 years of history and more than 190,000 spectators in the last edition, it is the most important musical event of the year in Barcelona. Although PS programs more than 350 concerts in various locations, the nerve centre where the greatest density of programming and audience is concentrated is in the Forum complex.

Historically, PS has invested most of the resources and energy in the quality of the music, both the line-up and the sound, but has not put to much attention the spatial experience and physical identity. Being one of the top 10 worldwide music festivals, this has become a must. The project, commissioned by Primavera Sound, is a global temporary Master Plan for the Forum Site, aiming to radically improve the user experience and the imagery of the festival.

The process implied an exhaustive research of the global context (studying over 20 other reference festivals), the construction of multiple operative maps to identify weaknesses and potentials and the conceptualisations and development of an ephemeral architecture proposal and design guidelines. The masterplan solutions and guidelines have been progressively implemented over the past 5 years.
