CIVIC PLACEMAKING 3
Primer de Maig, Granollers
Triggering playful interactions to foster popular appropriation of public space. Design as situated community action and play as a means of urban analysis through citizen science and digital technologies.

The city is made up of things and people. The city is a network of complex and variable relationships, both in space and time, between the physical dimension (urban planning, architecture, infrastructure) and the relational dimension (community action, culture, social rights). We propose a design format that straddles both realities and works with the knowledge, personnel, and processes specific to each of those areas. This strategy is based contemporary activation devices (TADs): small constructions that support temporary uses of public space initiated autonomously by citizens. Through this format, we achieve a large social impact with a cost 10 times lower than that of traditional public space urbanisation, while working in conjunction with the municipal departments dedicated to urban planning and community action.
In summary, in the Civic Placemaking 3 research project, we address both the physical-material and social-relational dimensions of the city in order to better understand it and to inform projects for the transformation and improvement of public space. On a methodological level, we correlate the spaces of opportunity detected through the urban structure maps developed in the survey phase (chapter II) with the spaces activated by the neighbourhood residents during the action phase (chapter III), and subsequently converted into behavioural maps during the diagnostic phase (chap. IV), in order to identify the optimal places for an urban intervention intended to activate the social fabric. The result is the proposal (chapter V) of an urbanisation strategy based on a temporary activation of the neighbourhood by residents that seeks to systemically integrate design, action and social impact.
