Home Moira

Exhibition curatorship and design

Now you See Me Moria is a no profit organisation created by a Spanish photographer and some refugees from Moria’s refugee Camp in Lesvos to raise awareness and promote civic mobilisation to denounce and put pressure on European policy makers to change the present shameful migration policy.

Now You See Me Moria uses diverse digital platforms to publish images and videos of the daily life and the dramatic life conditions in the camp and invites European citizens to take action, based on theses images, to spread the information and send messages to the EU politicians and mass media.

The project also reaches cultural institutions all over Europe (museums, photography festivals) while keeping the original aim: to reach as many citizens as possible and engage them to spread the message.

Home Moria is a result of a collective research in new exhibition formats for NYSMM, based on the original aim, rules and philosophy of the project. Home Moria reflects on the concept of home and creates a radical juxtaposition between the qualities the make a home and the dreadful reality of the camp.

Home Moria proposes a very basic interactive format, where the visitors, European citizens unveil the shameful reality of the Camp hidden under the beautiful words that define what a home is. The exhibition kit, to be easily produced and implemented anywhere, includes also a series of cards that, based on the same interaction principle, invite visitors to sign them and send the to the European policy makers.

Home Moria was exhibited in Nantes, in the context of the Matia Mou contemporary Greek culture festival.

Seure a la Fresca

Seniors is a project made collaboration with the Urban Ecology and Social Rights departments of the City Council of Barcelona to provide temporary quality public space in direct contact with the more than 80 senior homes located in the city centre.

The project was developed in two parts, involving two MEATS year students. The first part included filed studies and the design of a methodology to approach each case, in order to identify potentials and opportunities.

The second part consisted in proposing a material system and developing four different prototypes. One of them was developed to a construction level and is expected to be implemented soon.

The material system proposed is based in prefabricated rammed earth blocks, an innovative material used in permanent construction that has never been used in temporary urban space projects.

Once we assume that tactical interventions are not only an emergency solution but a new powerful tool for fast-track urban transformations, it is time to explore new material solutions that, allow for an harmonic integration in the urban fabric while being fully consistent as temporary and sustainable. Its mechanical and tectonic qualities, together with an immaculately closed life cycle, make rammed earth block an extremely interesting material.

Pause Space

A shadow by day, a beacon by night. An unprogrammed space, a place to pause, becomes a salient feature in the ebullient atmosphere of a music festival.

Pause Space is an installation designed and built by MEATS students for Monumental Club Festival in Barcelona. The challenge was to conceive an element that could work as a beacon and a meeting point while representing the brand identity of the sponsor, a bear company based in Granada which corporate image is based in arabesque jalis.

The second main challenge was logisitics: the installation had to be setup in 9 hours.

The projecte was conceptualized and developed taking these major constraints as design opportunities. MEATS team proposed a construction system using a metal mesh and 11.000 reused plastic glasses to create a light responsive jail, that would wrap a 6 meters tall steel structure with a hexagonal plan.

The result is a both a beacon and a contemplative space, where people laid on a soft ground made of carpets and pillows and observe the sky framed by the kaleidoscopic hexagonal tube.

Temporary space design as a social cohesion strategy. Active citizens, primary school children, city council members and design researchers collaborate to reclaim a neglected public square for common public use. This project unleashed a grassroots initiative that continues to this day.

Descobrir Joaquim Jordà

Phygital exhibition formats to showcase the seminal work of filmmaker Joaquim Jordà.

Descobrir Joaquim Jorda is a colaborative project created and developed by MEATS-Elisava and a team integrated by professors and students from the Masters in Creative Documentary-UPF, led by Jordi Balló.

Joaquim Jordà was a prominent writer, screenwriter and film maker. His genius vision and work opened new ways to create and understand documentary movies. He was also a prominent professor in the UPF communication school and some of his most relevant movies were produced in collaboration with the master’s in creative documentary.

Descobrir Joaquim Jorda is an exhibition co-curated by MEATS students and UPF students that never met Jordà and discovered his personality and legacy along the curatorship process. The main aim of the curatorial proposal was to let the students discover and explain, through an exhibition, the person, the artist and his vision and work to the present students of the UPF communication Campus that, as them, never met him and didn’t know his work.

MEATs students’ contribution to the project consisted in co-curating, conceptualising, developing and producing the exhibition. After visioning the movies and interviews and reading many texts and articles, MEATS students proposed 5 different narratives and exhibition formats. All these ideas were discussed in group to come out with a consistent exhibition concept. From there, the students developed the design and managed production and construction.
